Advances in Solid State Physics and New Materials - Fall Workshop 2026

Next Lecture

6. August 2026. - Ivana Evans: "Writing Successful Proposals for Experiments at Large-Scale Research Facilities: Before, During, and After the Experiment"

13. August 2026. - Ivana Evans: "Structural Characterization of Functional Materials: Diffraction and Complementary Techniques"

The Fall Workshop 2026 features a lecture series running from August through December, providing an engaging introduction to state-of-the-art experimental characterization techniques available at leading large-scale user facilities around the world. Designed for graduate students, early-career researchers, and scientists seeking to broaden their experimental expertise, the series presents advanced methods that are transforming research in condensed matter physics, solid-state chemistry, and materials science.

Topics include x-ray and neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering (REXS/RIXS), x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and other cutting-edge experimental techniques. Through a combination of fundamental concepts, practical insights, and examples from frontier research, participants will gain a solid understanding of these powerful methods, their capabilities, and their applications to contemporary scientific challenges.

By bridging fundamental principles with real-world research, the lecture series prepares participants to effectively utilize modern large-scale user facilities and to integrate advanced characterization techniques into their own research, fostering innovation and enabling the next generation of discoveries in functional and quantum materials.
